CSC Fall Gardening Event Recap
On Saturday, October 24, a gardening event was held at the Creative School for Children. This event was a collaborative effort between the Creative School for Children, the UCF Arboretum, Phi Sigma Pi honors fraternity, and countless dedicated parent volunteers. Over 90 people were in attendance for this special and productive day. The goal was to enhance UCF's Creative School for Children's outdoor learning environment. Four raised beds were constructed including two native plant beds, a seed sprouting bed, and sensory digging bed, along with the installation of a large a bird feeder. Volunteers also cleaned, pruned, and mulched already existing butterfly and sensory gardens. While Phi Sigma Pi students planned games and activities for the children. Home Depot, Creative School Parent Association, UCF Arboretum, and Phi Sigma Pi donated plants, and materials for the event. Click the following links to view photos from the event. Mr. and Ms. UCF visit the Creative School
October 15, 2009
Mr. and Ms. UCF, Tyson Nales and Dasha Gonzalez, visited with the children at the Creative School, bringing friends with them to make a presentation about Ms. UCF's platform, Dental Health. They spoke to the children about the importance of good dental hygiene and gave gifts (toothbrushes and timers) to the children as well. Ms. UCF then very generously allowed the students to try on her tiara and Mr. UCF allowed them to try on his sash. They read a book to the children about spiders, and Mr. UCF sang a song from Disney's Aladdin. We are lucky enough to have Mr. and Ms. UCF visit annually and always enjoy their visits.
CSC Instructors Publish Second Book
September 23, 2009
Moving to a new home is always hard. It's even tougher to figure out what to do with the pets and plants in your fish tank if it is not possible to take them with you." Two of Creative School For Children Instructors, Suzie Caffery, and Diahn Escue, partnered with the UCF Biology Dept. and the University of Southern California to tackle this issue that has resulted in invasive species being introduced into the environment. Caffery & Escue were two selected educators brought together for a week long workshop in the Florida Keys in 2008 to create a children's book on aquarium dumping. During this workshop, educators were provided with information on two marine invasive species that scientists are convinced were the result of '"aquarium dumping" : a feathery, green seaweed (Caulerpa taxifolia) and the red lionfish (Pterois volitans). Within the week, and amazing book began to take shape.
Ms. Caffery & Ms. Escue will be signing copies of their book A New Home For An Old Friend on Friday, Sept. 25th from 3:30-5:30 in the CSC dining room. Please stop by for your free autographed copy!
